Unmukt Chand (born 26 March 1993) is a former Indian cricketer. He is a right-handed batsman who usually opens the batting. He played for Delhi in Indian domestic cricket tournaments. Chand led the India Under-19 cricket team to the U-19 Cricket World Cup victory in 2012.

He hit an unbeaten 111 in the final against Australia in Townsville, winning the praise of Australian great Ian Chappell. On 13th August 2021, he announced that he had retired from playing cricket in India.

Unmukt Chand, India’s 2012 Under-19 World Cup-winning captain, has left Indian cricket at the age of 28. In a note posted on his Twitter account, Unmukt Chand said he had decided to “bid adieu to BCCI and seek better opportunities around the world”.*Chand has signed up with the Silicon Valley Strikers for the 2021 season of the Minor League Cricket, a national T20 competition in the United States.

Unmukt Chand will make his debut in the tournament against the Socal Lashings on Saturday. Having relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area, he has also signed a multi-year deal with Major League Cricket to support the development of the game in the country by playing with and mentoring the next generation of American cricketers.

After his heroics at the Under-19 level – he scored 111 not out in that 2012 final against Australia to win the Player-of-the-Match award – Unmukt Chand was marked for success at the higher level too, but he couldn’t make the grade, never representing India at the international level.

Unmukt Chand was born in a Kumauni family to Bharat Chand Thakur and Rajeshwari Chand, who are teachers. He shifted from DPS Noida to Modern School, Barakhamba Road in the 9th standard.

Unmukt Chand made his First-Class debut for Delhi at the age of 17 in 2010-11. He is an outrageous stroke player and has shown the ability to play the ball on the rise with the full flourish of the bat. He is on the selectors’ radar, who called him for India A series against West Indies A and New Zealand A in 2013. He was handed the reins of leadership at the young age of 20 in those games.

Unmukt Chand had led India to glory at the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2012. Not only did he marshal his troops with the strategic acumen of a veteran, but he also rose to the occasion when it mattered the most. Chand’s unbeaten ton in the final against Australia sealed the triumph and he impressed some of the most cerebral minds in cricket, included Ian Chappell.

In many ways, he drew comparisons with Virat Kohli, as they came from the same state and led India to under-19 World Cup victories. In 2013, he launched his book ‘Sky is the limit’ which chronicles India’s journey during the under-19 World Cup.

A student of St Stephen’s (one of the leading Indian colleges), Unmukt Chand has played for the Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for three seasons and is now a part of the Rajasthan Royals.
