Who was James Brokenshire?

James Brokenshire (8 January 1968 – 7 October 2021) was a British politician and Cabinet minister. A Conservative, he served in Theresa May’s Cabinet as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland from 2016 to 2018, and then as Secretary of State for Housing, Communities, and Local Government from 2018 to 2019. 

In 2020 he was appointed by Boris Johnson as Minister of State for Security at the Home Office. He stepped down from this post in January 2021 on grounds of his continuing ill health with lung cancer, of which he died on 7 October 2021. Brokenshire was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Old Bexley and Sidcup from the 2010 general election until his death.

Former Government minister and Conservative MP for Old Bexley and Sidcup James Brokenshire, has died from lung cancer at the age of 53.

Brokenshire, the former housing minister, had been suffering from lung cancer before his death his family has said in a statement.

Family statement following James Brokenshire’s death

In a statement, James Brokenshire’s family said: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of James Brokenshire MP at the age of 53.

“James died peacefully at Darent Valley Hospital yesterday evening with family members by his bedside. He had been in hospital since Sunday after his condition rapidly deteriorated.

“James was not only a brilliant Government minister as both Security and Immigration Minister at the Home Office and Secretary of State at the Northern Ireland Office and Ministry for Housing, Communities & Local Government, but a dedicated constituency MP, first for Hornchurch from 2005 to 2010, and then for Old Bexley & Sidcup for the past 11 years.

“But most importantly, he was a loving father to his three children, a devoted husband to Cathy and a faithful friend to so many.

“We would like to thank all the NHS staff, particularly those at Guy’s & St Thomas’ in London, who cared for James with such warmth, diligence and professionalism over the past three-and-a-half years.

“We would also ask that our privacy as a family is respected at this time.”

James Brokenshire Education

James was educated at Davenant Foundation Grammar School, Loughton; Cambridge Centre for Sixth Form Studies; and the University of Exeter, where he studied law.

James Brokenshire Career

James Brokenshire was elected as the Conservative Party MP for Old Bexley and Sidcup in 2010, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 18,952.  He was the MP for Hornchurch between 2005 and 2010 before his then seat was impacted by boundary changes.

The Old Bexley and Sidcup constituency is contained in the southeastern corner of London along the A2 and A20 down to the border with Kent.   Containing a number of owner-occupiers, many of the local population commute daily into central London.  This is a safe Conservative seat which was previously represented in Parliament between 1950 and 2001, by the former Conservative Prime Minister, Sir Edward Heath.

Brokenshire served in the Cabinet as Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government between 2018 and 2019, and as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland between 2016 and 2018. He was Security Minister as Minister of State at the Home Office between 2020 and 2021 and 2011 and 2016.

Brokenshire was politically close to the former Conservative Prime Minister, Theresa May, having previously worked under her at the Home Office.

Born in 1968 in Southend-on-Sea, Brokenshire grew up in Basildon and then Loughton.  He studied a law degree at Exeter University.

Before entering Parliament James Brokenshire was a partner at the law firm  Jones Day Gouldens. He is married to Catherine and the couple has three children.

Brokenshire had successfully battled lung cancer in 2017.  In 2021, he stood down from his Ministerial position after further lung surgery. He died in October 2021.

Brokenshire said that he wanted to end the social stigma around lung cancer because, like fifteen percent of people with the disease, he had never smoked. In January 2021, he took a leave of absence from his ministerial post in preparation for a pneumonectomy. On 3 October 2021, Brokenshire was admitted to Darent Valley Hospital in Kent amid a further deterioration in his condition, where he died on 7 October, aged 53.
