Actor Tony Sirico, who is best known for playing henchman Peter Paul “Paulie Walnuts” Gualtieri on HBO’s “The Sopranos,” has died, according to his manager Bob McGowan.He was 79, according to his IMDB profile.McGowan did not provide a cause of death, but called Sirico a “very loyal and long-term client” of 25 years and someone who “always gave to charity.”

Sirico’s “Sopranos” co-star Michael Imperioli also shared the news on Instagram, saying Sirico died on Friday.

“Tony was like no one else: he was as tough, as loyal and as big hearted as anyone i’ve ever known,” he wrote. “I was at his side through so much: through good times and bad. But mostly good. And we had a lot of laughs.

“Sirico, a Brooklyn native, amassed several credits in the late ’80s and ’90s, appearing in films like “Goodfellas,” “Mighty Aphrodite,” and “Mickey Blue Eyes.”But he became well known — particularly in households with cable — through “The Sopranos,” playing the colorful but brutal-when-necessary Paulie Walnuts.

At the time of his audition, he recalled in one interview, he was 55 and sleeping on his mother’s couch. He’d auditioned for a different character, but creator David Chase approached him with a different role, that turned out to be iconic in its own right.

“He said, ‘You want the good news or the bad news?'” Sirico recalled in a 2021 interview. “I said, ‘Give me the bad news.’ He said, ‘You didn’t get Uncle Junior. But I have something in mind. Would you be willing to do a recurring role on the show? I have a character called Paulie Walnuts.'”

Sirico was born in New York City on July 29, 1942, to a family of Italian descent. He grew up in Brooklyn, in the East Flatbush and Bensonhurst neighborhoods. Sirico’s brother, Robert Sirico, is a Catholic priest and co-founder of the free-market Acton Institute.

Sirico was convicted of several crimes and had been arrested 28 times, including for disorderly conduct, assault, and robbery, before taking up acting. On February 27, 1970, he was arrested at a restaurant and found with a .32 caliber revolver on his person.

In 1971, he was indicted for extortion, coercion, and felony weapons possession, convicted and sentenced to four years in prison, of which he served 20 months at Sing Sing.

According to a court transcript at the time of his sentencing, Sirico was the owner of a discotheque in Manhattan, and also had pending charges for criminal possession of a dangerous drug. 

Sirico stated that he was visited by an acting troupe composed of ex-convicts during his imprisonment, which inspired him to give acting a try. He appeared in the 1989 documentary The Big Bang by James Toback, in which he discussed his earlier life.

Tony Sirico made his acting debut in ‘Crazy Joe,’ which was a film about the life of mobster Joey Gallo, in 1974. He also appeared in ‘Godfather, Part II’ the same year. He had his first speaking role in this movie. He was best known for playing mobsters in groundbreaking gangster films.

He has been cast frequently by Woody Allen and James Toback. He has played roles of gangsters in films such as ‘Fingers’ (1978), ‘Love and Money’ (1982), ‘Goodfellas’ (1990), ‘Innocent Blood’ (1992), ‘Mighty Aphrodite’ (1995), ‘Bullets Over Broadway’ (1994), and ‘Mob Queen’ (1998).

Tony played the role of a policeman in ‘Dead Presidents’ (1995) and ‘Deconstructing Harry’ (1997).He made his first TV appearance in ‘Kojak’ in 1977. He continued appearing in series such as ‘Police Squad! (1982) and ‘Miami Vice’ (1989).
