Who is Sunita Devi Weightlifter?
Sunita Devi is a backward class girl from Sisar Khas village of Rohtak district who has won numerous national and international medals in strength-lifting, presently works as a domestic help in the village to make ends meet.
Her family is so poor that they do not get even two square meals a day. Sunita primarily lives on a diet of ‘roti’ and ‘mirchi’ (chapatis and green chillies) and labours hard to maintain her fitness and strength. She has been using branches of trees and bricks to practise her sport.

Sunita Devi has won the gold medal in the World Championship. She has also bagged the gold medal in the National Strength-lifting Championship-2019 organised in Chhattisgarh and silver medal in the National Strength-lifting Championship-2021 in West Bengal. Political leaders ranging from local MLA Balraj Kundu to Union Minister Rajnath Singh have acknowledged Sunita’s achievements and assured her of help, but no help has been received till date.
Sunita Devi’s father is a labourer and mother works as domestic help. She also assist her mother whenever she gets assignments of cooking food at local ceremonies and get-togethers. Sunita also do household chores and serve incapacitated elders of well-to-do villagers for a living.
Sunita Devi Weightlifter Family
Sunita Devi’s parents Jamuna Devi and Ishwar Singh, who work as daily wagers, have taken loans from private moneylenders for her training and her travels to participate in sporting events. Jamuna Devi had to take a loan of Rs 1.5 lakh on heavy interest from a private moneylender to send her to Bangkok for the World Strength-lifting Championship in 2020 and they are working hard to repay the loan.
MLA Meham Balraj Kundu Comes To Aid
Independent MLA from Meham Balraj Kundu today reached out to world strength-lifting champion Sunita Devi of Sisar Khas village in Rohtak district, who was forced to work as domestic help to make ends meet.
The MLA announced a special monetary grant of Rs 5 lakh, in addition to Rs 3.5 lakh for a training kit and a monthly diet allowance of Rs 10,000 for the girl. He also directed the village sarpanch to provide a plot to Sunita and assured the player that he would get a house built for her family. The move comes after the publication of a news report in The Tribune highlighting the world champion’s plight.
Interacting with Sunita at her makeshift dwelling in the village today, Kundu asked her to train for weightlifting apart from her sport strength-lifting and prepare for the next Olympics without any worry. Sunita and Sandeep Sharma, sarpanch of Sisar Khas village, thanked the MLA.
Meanwhile, Indri MLA Ram Kumar Kashyap also visited Sunita at her village today and assured her of all possible help from the state government.
Sports Minister Kiran Rijiju Comes To Help Sunita Devi
Rijiju said that since sports is in the domain of state governments, he would expect the state government to provide her assistance. The sports minister said, he loved all types of sports, but since strength lifting is not recognized in Olympics, he was bound by rules. Assistance is given to only those players who win medals in Olympic sports. “In spite of this, I will help Sunita and guide her”, Rijiju promised.
