Former Formula 1 team boss Sir Frank Williams, whose squad became one of the most successful in grand prix racing’s history, has passed away. He was 79.

A short statement from the Williams team said he had been admitted to hospital on Friday and passed away peacefully on Sunday morning surrounded by his family.

The Williams team earned 114 F1 victories, along with seven drivers’ titles and nine constructors’ crowns, to became one of the best-known teams on the grid.

Frank Williams had originally founded Williams Grand Prix Engineering in 1977, having previously run cars in Formula 2 and Formula 3.

He elected to commit to his own F1 squad after a tie-up with Canadian oil magnate Walter Wolf did not turn out as he had hoped.

Forming a close alliance with long-serving technical chief Patrick Head, Williams’ steely determination came to the fore as he helped turn the squad in to F1 winners within a couple of years.

Williams saw Clay Regazzoni claim a maiden victory for the team in the 1979 British Grand Prix, with its first F1 drivers’ and constructors’ championship double coming a year later when Alan Jones ended the season on top.

The Williams team would go on to win championships with Keke Rosberg, Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill, and Jacques Villeneuve.

Despite the success on the track, Williams faced his own personal challenges off it after being confined to a wheelchair since a car accident near the Paul Ricard circuit in France in 1986.

Frank Williams was born in the South Tyneside town of South Shields. His father was an active Royal Air Force officer at the time, while his mother was a school teacher. After his parents’ marriage fell apart, Williams was partly reared by his aunt and uncle in Jarrow.

He spent the rest of his childhood at St Joseph’s College in Dumfries, Scotland, a private, fee-paying boarding school. In the late 1950s, Williams was given a ride in a Jaguar XK150 by a friend, which piqued his interest in fast automobiles.

After selling the team to investment firm Dorilton Capital, the Briton and his family, including daughter Claire, who had been running the team on a day-to-day basis since 2013, left F1 earlier this year after selling Williams to US investors in September 2020.

Sir Frank,in 2012, started limiting his F1 duties after he stepped down from the Williams board, after suffering spinal cord damage in a vehicle accident in 1986 that rendered him unable to walk.

Claire the took over the role of the family spokesperson and was eventually promoted to Deputy Team Principal, in charge of day-to-day operations. Even after that, Sir Frank retained the title of Team Principal.

His illness injury history has been long. In 2016, Williams had to spend time in the hospital since he was recovering from pneumonia, and as a result In December of last year, he was also admitted to the hospital.

According to a statement released by the team, Williams was admitted to the hospital on Friday and died peacefully on Sunday morning surrounded by his family. Illness is said to have been the cause of his death.

“It is with great sadness that on behalf of the Williams family, the team can confirm the death of Sir Frank Williams CBE, founder and former team principal of Williams Racing, at the age of 79.

“After being admitted into hospital on Friday, Sir Frank passed away peacefully this morning surrounded by his family.

“Today we pay tribute to our much loved and inspirational figurehead. Frank will be sorely missed. We request that all friends and colleagues respect the Williams family’s wishes for privacy at this time,” the team said.

Williams, a former racing driver, formed his namesake team in 1977 and went on to become one of F1’s most successful constructors, winning nine constructors’ and seven drivers’ championships, as well as 114 race victories.

He marked 50 years as an F1 boss in 2019 to become the longest-serving supremo in the sport.
