Teeside radio presenter Simon Bolton has died aged 54, after a ‘short illness’ which saw him hospitalized with Covid ahead of Christmas.

The Zetland FM broadcaster died on Christmas Eve, after testing positive for the illness, however, his cause of death is yet to be confirmed.

Bolton’s wife of 17 years, Joanne, said the DJ – who had worked at the local Redcar and Cleveland station since its launch in 2015 – was taken into James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough on December 22.

She said, via TeessideLive: ‘He was well-known by people. He had a good gob on him, he could talk for England!

‘He kept himself in the know, especially with the Boro and music.

‘Being a radio presenter was what he wanted to do.’

Bolton had suffered health problems, including having his leg amputated, but continued to produce his radio show from his Redcar home.

A message on Zetland FM’s Facebook read shared the DJ – who shares a 16-year-old daughter, Leyla, with his wife – died after a ‘very short illness’.

A statement read: ‘Simon was a part of Zetland FM since our launch in 2015 and presented many programs on-air, including our Monday sports show, weekend breakfast, and the Friday rock show.

According to a statement issued by the station, Simon was “born and bred” in Redcar and attended Sacred Heart School.

Simon was survived by his wife of 17 years, Joanne, and his 16-year-old daughter Leyla.

After his death, Joanne said: “He was well-known by people! He had a good gob on him, he could talk for England!”

She added that “being a radio presenter was what he wanted to do.”

Simon passed away at James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough after battling Covid-19.

He had been admitted with the virus on Wednesday, December 22 and tragically lost his life two days later, on Christmas Eve.

On December 26, Zetland FM shared the sad news with Simon’s fans.

They said in a statement: “Simon will be hugely missed by all his colleagues, friends and listeners at Zetland FM and we send our heartfelt condolences to his wife Joanne, daughter Leyla, family and friends.”

Simon had previously suffered health problems and had begun producing his show at home after having to have his leg amputated.
