Shaun Maloney has told how red tape stopped him from taking Hibs for the Premier Sports Cup Final.

The new Hibees boss was left gutted as he had to watch on as Celtic ran out 2-1 winners at Hampden on Sunday thanks to a Kyogo Furuhashi brace.

However, Maloney is determined they’ll be back at the national stadium under his watchful eye after the former Belgium national team assistant coach was unveiled at Easter Road yesterday.

The 38-year-old has signed a three-a-half-year deal in Leith after leaving Roberto Martinez’s Belgian set-up – coming into the capital club to replace Jack Ross.

Revealing why he wasn’t in the Hampden dugout, the former Celtic and Scotland man said: “I would have loved to have had that challenged, but it just wasn’t possible. When you have different federations involved and clubs, it just became impossible.

“I thought they were excellent, particularly in the second half. The first half was difficult, but they can be proud of their performance.

“It’s difficult when you get beat, but David Gray and Craig Samson deserve a lot of credit as they stayed in the fight and a lot of big moments went Celtic’s way, and that was the difference.

“What’s been shown domestically is there are other teams who have won cups recently.
