Chiefs, Bay of Plenty and Māori All Blacks back Sean Wainui has died in a car crash in Omanawa, near Tauranga, on Monday morning.

Bay of Plenty police issued a statement this morning saying one person had died after a single-vehicle crash at McLaren Falls Park.

Police were notified that a car had crashed into a tree at around 7:50 am. A family member confirmed to NZME that the 25-year-old father Wainui was the driver.

The sole occupant of the vehicle died at the scene. The Serious Crash Unit attended the scene, and inquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.

Tauranga City Council said in a media statement the park would be closed today due to the crash and emergency services were at the scene.

A St John spokeswoman said two ambulances were called to the scene.

Wainui was born in the small settlement of Whatatutu near Gisborne and raised in Auckland before attending Takapuna Grammar School where he was a stand-out as captain of the first XV before making his debut for Taranaki in 2014, while still a teenager. A year later he won the Junior World Championship with the New Zealand Under 20 team, earned his first Super Rugby contract with the Crusaders, and represented the Māori All Blacks for the first time.

Sean Wainui was a New Zealand rugby union player. He played for the Bay of Plenty, Chiefs, Crusaders, Taranaki, and the Māori All Blacks. Wainui played 53 games for Taranaki, 44 games for the Chiefs, nine for the Crusaders, and represented New Zealand Māori since 2015. This season he had joined Bay of Plenty for the Bunnings NPC.

He joined the Chiefs in 2018 and became a fan favorite either in the midfield or on the wing where he broke the record for a number of tries in a Super Rugby game with five against the Waratahs in June 2021.

He began his Super Rugby career in Christchurch with the Crusaders, before switching to the Chiefs in 2018. Wainui had also become a fixture of the Maori All Blacks, while he had switched from Taranaki to Bay of Plenty for this year’s Bunnings NPC tournament.
