Samuel Anthony Alito Jr. was born April 1, 1950, in Trenton, New Jersey, USA, to an Italian immigrant father, Samuel A. Alito, Sr., and an Italian-American mother, Rose Francisco. His father was a high school teacher and became the first director of the New Jersey Office of Legislative Services (1952 to 1984). His mother, too, worked as a teacher. Alito grew up in Hamilton, New Jersey, a suburb of Trenton.

He has served in the military and was released as captain in 1980. After serving on the appellate court, Alito became the United States Attorney General for the state of New Jersey.

He attended Steinert High School, graduating as Valedictorian in 1968, and graduated from Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude at Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University in 1972, completing a high thesis under Walter’s supervision. In 1975, Samuel Alito became editor of the Yale Law Journal. He served as clerk of the appellate judge Leonard I. Garth in Newark in 1976 and 1977. As a United States Attorney General from the state of New Jersey (between 1977 and 1981), Alito was involved in a number of drug trafficking cases and organized crime.

From 1981 to 1985, Alito represented the federal government in 12 cases before the Supreme Court while serving as assistant attorney general Rex E. Lee. He then worked in the Office of the Legal Adviser as Deputy Attorney General until 1987.

Alito also served as a visiting professor at Duke University School of Law and presented lectures on current issues in constitutional translation. He also taught courses under the Master of Laws in Judicial Studies program.

His talk entitled The Origin of the Baseball Antitrust Exemption, presented during the 2008 Annual General Meeting of the Supreme Court of Social History, was featured in two newspapers.
