Rapper Biz Markie or Marcel Theo Hall born on April 8, 1964, is an American rapper, singer, DJ, record producer, actor, comedian, and writer. He is best known for his 1989 single “Just a Friend”, which became a Top 40 hit in several countries. In 2008, “Just a Friend” made No. 100 on VH1’s list of the 100 greatest hip hop songs of all time.

American rapper, DJ, and producer Biz Markie, who shot to fame with his 1989 hit “Just a Friend”, died on Friday, aged 57, according to media reports. 

In a statement to US media, his representatives said he died with his wife by his side.

“Biz created a legacy of artistry that will forever be celebrated by his industry peers and his beloved fans whose lives he was able to touch through music, spanning over 35 years,” representative Jenni Izumi said in the statement.

No cause of death was given for the rapper, whose real name was Marcel Hall, but he had experienced health issues in recent years related to Type 2 diabetes, reports added.

Biz Markie was born in Manhattan, in the neighborhood of Harlem. He was raised on Long Island and graduated from Longwood High School in 1982. Markie began his career in New York City nightclubs and later gained regional recognition by performing at colleges in Washington, D.C.; Maryland; Virginia; and Pennsylvania.

Markie has been called the “Clown Prince of Hip Hop”. He went into the hospital for his diabetes in April 2020 and his condition to date is unclear. An update was posted by hiphopdx.com in December 2020. On July 1, 2021, rumors of his death circulated on Twitter. Rapper Biz Markie Health Update

Markie’s representatives have confirmed that Biz is still “under medical care, surrounded by professionals who are working hard to provide the best healthcare possible”.

They added that: “’Biz’s wife and family are touched by the outpouring of love and admiration from his friends, peers and fans alike.’

They added that: “At this time, we ask for your continued thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.’ 



Biz Markie’s health has reportedly deteriorated since 2020, prompting speculation about his wellbeing.

On June 30, 2021, rumors began to spread that the 57-year-old had passed away as “Biz Markie dead,” trended on Twitter.

However, much to the relief of his fans, Reporter Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson confirmed that Biz was alive and receiving palliative care in a hospice.

But, he added that he is ”still suffering from severe brain damage”.

Fans had previously fans had warnings not to spread misinformation, with pleas to respect Biz’s family.

The single “Just a Friend”, in which he alternates between rap and singing, became Markie’s most successful single, reaching No. 9 on the Billboard charts.

Markie’s third studio album I Need a Haircut was released on August 27, 1991, on Cold Chillin’/Warner Bros. Records and was produced by Markie and his cousin Cool V. Sales of the album were already low when Markie was served a lawsuit by Gilbert O’Sullivan, who claimed that the album’s “Alone Again” featured an unauthorized sample from his hit “Alone Again (Naturally)”. 

In 2002, Markie appeared in Men in Black II, with Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, essentially playing an alien parody of himself, whose native language sounded exactly like beatboxing.

Markie began 2008 opening for Chris Rock’s “No Apologies” tour. 

In December 2009, Biz Markie appeared in a RadioShack commercial, repeating the line: “Oh Snap! Guess what I saw!” from his song “Just a Friend”. That same year saw his debut with Andy Milonakis in television commercials for the commercial Internet service Tune Up.
