R. KELLY ENGAGED TO ALLEGED SEX VICTIM JOYCELYN SAVAGE

This month, singer R. Kelly was sentenced to 30 years in prison on sex trafficking charges and still has more charges pending. The parents of his girlfriend, Joycelyn Savage, released a statement hoping the harsh sentencing meant their estranged daughter would return home.

Now Joycelyn reveals that she and and R. Kelly are engaged.
In a letter written to the judge ahead of R. Kelly’s sentencing, obtained by AllHipHop , Joycelyn Savage identifies herself as Robert Kelly’s fiancée.
In her plea for leniency Joycelyn insists she has wrongly been portrayed as a victim by the government and that R. Kelly is the best thing that’s ever happened to her.

R. Kelly Career

MGM (Musically Gifted Men or Mentally Gifted Men) was formed in 1989 with Robert Kelly, Marc McWilliams, Vincent Walker and Shawn Brooks. In 1990, MGM were offered a contract with an independent label, Tavdash Records. Shortly after, they recorded and released one single, “Why You Wanna Play Me”; after its release, the group disbanded.

In September 1980, Kelly entered Kenwood Academy in the city’s Hyde Park-Kenwood district, where he met music teacher Lena McLin, who encouraged Kelly to perform the Stevie Wonder classic “Ribbon in the Sky” in the high school talent show. A shy Kelly put on sunglasses, was escorted onto the stage, sang the song and won first prize. McLin encouraged Kelly to leave the high school basketball team and concentrate on music. She said he was furious at first, but after his performance in the talent show, he changed his mind. Kelly was diagnosed with dyslexia, which left him unable to read or write. Kelly dropped out of high school after attending Kenwood Academy for one year. He began performing in the subway under the Chicago “L” tracks. He regularly busked at the “L” stop on the Red Line’s Jackson station in the Loop.

Throughout his career, Kelly has been repeatedly accused of sexual abuse with young adults and minors. He faced multiple civil suits and was indicted by criminal courts in Chicago, New York, Illinois, and Minnesota. He repeatedly denied the charges. In 1994, he illegally married his underage protégé Aaliyah. In 2002, he was indicted but eventually acquitted on 21 counts of making child pornography.

In January 2019, a Lifetime television docuseries, Surviving R. Kelly, helped resurface the scandal. Under pressure from the Mute R. Kelly movement, RCA Records terminated Kelly’s contract with the label. In 2019, several jurisdictions built criminal cases against Kelly, and grand juries brought indictments in both federal and state courts. In 2021, the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York tried and won the first criminal conviction against Kelly for a sex offense, with the jury finding Kelly guilty on a total of nine criminal counts including violations of the Mann Act and racketeering. On June 29, 2022, Kelly was sentenced to 30 years in prison  Kelly continues to challenge his New York conviction.

As of June 2022, Kelly is scheduled to face another federal trial in the Northern District of Illinois alongside his former employees. The indictment alleges Kelly both produced child sexual abuse material and conspired with employees to corruptly win his 2008 acquittal. The trial is scheduled to begin on August 15, 2022.

R. Kelly Personal Life

Kelly’s mother, Joanne, died from cancer in 1993. He has given conflicting accounts of where he was during his mother’s passing. His oldest daughter, JoAnn (born in 1998), was named after the singer’s mother, but is also known as Buku Abi.

In 1996, Kelly married Andrea Kelly (née Lee), his former backup dancer and mother of his three children, the aforementioned JoAnn, as well as Jaah (b. 2000), and Robert, Jr. (b. 2002) Andrea filed a restraining order against Kelly in September 2005 after a physical altercation, ultimately filing for divorce in 2006. In January 2009, their divorce was finalized after 13 years of marriage. Recently, including in Surviving R. Kelly (2019), Andrea, herself, accused Kelly of physical, verbal and mental abuse.

R. Kelly Sexual Misconduct Conviction

The R&B artist, 55, was convicted last September in New York of racketeering and sex trafficking crimes.

He had faced years of allegations and the judge on Wednesday said he had an “indifference to human suffering”.

Lawyers for the singer, whose real name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, say he will appeal.

Ahead of his sentencing, a handful of women took the stand to confront Kelly.

A woman identified only as Angela called the singer a Pied Piper who “grew in wickedness” with every new victim, while others who were not named testified he had broken their spirits.
