Pradeep Bhide, the best known newscaster of Marathi television, passed away at the age of 68 Tuesday. The exemplary voice artiste had pioneered the art of reading bulletins and hosting shows on Mumbai Doordarshan where he served for 35 years, well before its name was changed to Sahyadri.
Bhide had been suffering from cancer of the brain.

“His last rites were performed in Andheri in the presence of several colleagues from Mumbai Doordarshan. He lived in Lallubhai Park. He is survived by wife Sujata, a son and daughter,” said DD Sahyadri’s news editor Radhika Aghor.

Bhide shaped DDK Mumbai’s newscast since its formative years, having joined in 1974 merely two years after the channel’s inception October 2, 1972. His crisp announcement “Namaskar. Mi Pradeep Bhide. Aajcha thalak batmya” (Today’s headlines) and easy familiar style resonated with generations of viewers.

He was born to his parents Shubhalakshmi and Jagannath who were a teacher in armaveer Bhaurao Patil’s Rayat Shikshan Sanstha.

Moreover, Pradeep was schooled in five or six Maharashtra villages as he was transferred to various schools. He came to Pune for his college education after passing his 11th SSC.

Similarly, he completed a journalism course at ‘Ranade’ after graduating with a degree in science. From childhood, language traditions were taught at home.
