Paul Stanley Biography, Wiki

Born January 20, 1952, Paul Stanley is a 69-year-old musician. He’s the co-founder, frontman, rhythm guitarist, and co-lead singer for world-famous rock band, KISS.

Born with a condition called microtia, which left him with a partially formed right ear, and deaf on that side, Stanley found his salvation in the classical music favored by his parents and the doo-wop tunes coming from the radio, and by the time he got his first glimpse of The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964, he knew that rock ‘n’ roll was his ticket to stardom.

Stanley purchased his first electric guitar at age 14 and began jamming with friends in his Queens neighborhood. He was accepted to Manhattan’s High School of Music & Art for his drawing skills but instead devoted his energy to playing with a group called Post War Baby Boom while spending much of his junior year shopping song compositions to publishing companies and honing his skills.

Stanley is also the writer or co-writer for the majority of the band’s songs, including Black Diamond and Hotter Than Hell.

Born Stanley Bert Eisen in Manhattan, New York, he legally changed his name to Paul Stanley in 1974. He was allegedly inspired by Paul McCartney’s name.

Stanley suffered from a birth defect called microtia, where he couldn’t hear out of his right ear. In 1982, at age 30, he was able to get reconstructive surgery on his ear to address the problem.

Growing up, Stanley was always into music and the arts. He had a talent for graphic arts and attended the High School of Music & Art in New York, which he graduated in 1970.

In 1972, Stanley was introduced to Gene Simmons through a mutual friend and the two answered an advertisement in Rolling Stone magazine to form a band: KISS.

Stanley designed and created the iconic KISS logo, as well as designed various album covers and merchandise.

He’s responsible for one of the most iconic KISS songs, Rock and Roll All Nite.

The current band includes Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Tommy Thayer, and Eric Singer.

Each member of the band dresses up as a persona on stage, complete with costumes and face makeup.

Paul Stanley is known as the Starchild, and his face is painted white with a black star covering his right eye. Gene Simmons is known as the Demon, Tommy Thayer the Spaceman, and Eric Singer the Catman.

Paul Stanley’s guitar tech, Fran Stueber, died from COVID-19 on October 16, 2021.

Stanley posted to Twitter about the death, stating: “My dear friend, buddy and guitar tech for 20 years, Fran Stueber died yesterday suddenly of Covid. Both on and offstage I depended on him for so much. My family loved him as did I. He was so proud of his wife and 3 boys as they were of him. I’m numb.”

Paul Stanley Career

Paul initially joined a local band named ‘Rainbow,’ which he then left to join other bands such as ‘Uncle Joe’ and ‘Post War Baby Boom.’ Through Gene Simmons, he joined the band ‘Wicked Lester,’ which was later named ‘Kiss.’ The band began working immediately.

They recorded their first album in 1972. Unfortunately, it remained unreleasedKiss’ began working on another album immediately. Soon, they sealed a deal with ‘Casablanca Records’ and released their debut studio album, ‘Kiss.’ The album, which was released in 1974, opened to a lukewarm response.

The album sold about 75,000 copies and did not score even one hit single. None of its songs were featured on the major charts. The band went on many tours around the country to promote the album. Its sale eventually picked up pace, and the album eventually ended up selling 500,000 copies within a few years. The album was later certified “gold” by the ‘RIAA.’Over the years, the album was termed one of the most successful ‘Kiss’ albums ever. Gene Simmons said that it was his most favorite album of their band. It was also featured on the ‘Spin’ list of essential glam rock albums.

However, the band made waves for one more reason: their stage presence. The band members wore outrageous costumes and performed with painted faces. The elaborate live performances that ‘Kiss’ put up became iconic over the years. Following the slow response to their debut album, the band gained nationwide prominence with their subsequent albums, ‘Dressed to Kill,’ ‘Destroyer,’ and ‘Rock and Roll Over.’

Over the years, the band members kept changing, with Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley being the only constants. Stanley’s elaborate combination of costumes and make-up was named “Starchild.”The band enjoyed great success toward the late 1970s and the early 1980s. In 1983, the band members stopped using make-up and eccentric costumes after a change in the line-up. That “unmasked” era of the band continued for more than a decade.

In 1983, the band released the album ‘Lick it Up,’ which was certified “platinum” by the ‘RIAA’ and was the band’s most successful album till then. The album appealed to youngsters, and the band earned a whole new fan base. By then, their music videos were also being played on major TV channels, such as ‘MTV.’By the mid-1990s, the band had become one of the most successful mainstream American bands ever, and their fans began asking for the original line-up to come together again. Thus, all the original members of the band reunited.

Hence, the elaborate costumes and make-up also made a comeback into their live performances.‘Kiss’ has released 24 studio albums until now and is regarded as one of the most successful rock bands of all time. They have sold more than 75 million copies of their albums worldwide now.

The band also holds the record for the highest number of “gold”-certified albums, with 30 “gold” albums to their credit, including their live albums and compilation albums. In 2014, the four original members of the band were inducted into the ‘Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.’In 1978, the members of the band released their solo albums simultaneously. Paul’s album, titled ‘Paul Stanley,’ received moderate reviews and commercial success. However, it was termed the most “Kiss-like” album of all the four albums released.

Toward the late 1980s, Paul worked on another solo album, but he’s busy schedules with ‘Kiss’ got the album shelved. Nevertheless, some singles from the album were later released. In 2006, Paul released his second solo album, ‘Live to Win.’ Later that year, he embarked on a nationwide tour to promote his album.

In 2012, Paul collaborated with Gene Simmons and other investors to start a restaurant chain called ‘Rock & Brews.’

Paul Stanley Surgeries

In 1982, after Paul Stanley turned 30 years old, Stanley had reconstructive surgery for his right ear done by Frederic Rueckert, who had been performing the procedure primarily on children. The new ear was formed from cartilage from one of the singer’s ribs, with skin grafts put over it. Stanley said the surgery had given him “a new lease on life” and was so grateful to Rueckert that he gave the doctor a Rolex watch upon his retirement.

Because of his birth defect of microtia, Stanley is an ambassador for the charitable organization AboutFace, an organization that provides support and information to people with facial differences. He has appeared at fundraising events and in videos to raise awareness.

Stanley has had two hip replacement surgeries: one after the “Rock the Nation” tour in October 2004, and a second in December 2004 after complications arose from the first surgery. He had announced in 2005 that he will require a third hip surgery in the future. He regards the degeneration of his left hip as partly the product of thousands of shows performed in platform boots since the early 1970s.

In October 2011, Stanley had surgery on his vocal cords. He said, “I hold myself to a higher standard than others do. With that in mind, I wanted to remedy a few minor issues that come with 40 years of preaching rock ‘n’ roll.”
