Nirmala Mishra (21 October 1938 – 30 July 2022) was an Indian singer of predominantly Odia film songs and Bengali Modern and film songs. Most of her renderings from the 1960s and 1970s are revered by music aficionados.

She was one of the most respected and admired playback singers in both Odia and Bengali films. She was a recipient of the Sangeet Sudhakar Balakrushna Das Award as an honour for her lifetime contribution to Odia music.

Eminent Bengali singer Nirmala Mishra was admitted to a nursing home in south Kolkata after she complained of uneasiness due to low blood pressure, a senior official at the medical facility said on Sunday.

Mishra has long been battling age-related ailments.

The 79-year-old artiste was taken to the nursing home on Saturday night after she experienced a drop in blood pressure, the official said.

“Her condition is stable now. She will be undertaking the COVID-19 test today,” he added.

The renowned singer, a recipient of the Balakrushna Das Award, had suffered a brain stroke in July.

Nirmala Mishra was a very famous singer of Bengali songs. She rendered her voice for both Bengali Modern and film songs, and she owns several evergreen hit songs to her credit. She has also sung Nazrul Geeti, Rabindra Sangeet, Shyama Sangeet, Patriotic songs, Folk Songs etc. She was a playback singer with several chartbuster hits.

As a playback singer she was given the first break by the composer Balakrushna Das through 1960 movie Shri Lokanath. Her popular songs are included in the films – Kie Kaahaara, Stree, Abhinetree, Anutap, Amadaa Baata, Kaa, Malajanha and Adina Megha. She was a recipient of numerous awards including Balakrushna Das Award.

Nirmala Mishra was born in Majilpur, Bengal Presidency in British India as the daughter of Mohinimohan Mishra and Bhabani Devi. She was born on an auspicious day of Durga Saptami. She belonged to a family with music background.

Many of the members of her father’s family were professionally into singing. Her residence was near to the home of legendary singer and musician, Hemant Kumar. Banerjee is the original surname of the family, and ‘Misra’ is the honorary title received by her father, which he added to his name. Her father worked in Merchant office of Kolkata. Her elder brother was also a well-known musician.

She was seriously ill in 2018 and was hospitalized. But later she slowly recovered. She was suffering from several old age related diseases including pneumonia when she got admitted.

A household name in every Bengali family since 1970s, she still has millions of fans. Some of her popular songs are “O Tota Pakhire” and ”Emon Ekti Jhinuk Khuje Pelam Na”. Hearing about her falling health, her fans prayed for her speedy recovery.

She was given the opportunity to perform a song for the first time in 1960 in the Odia film Shri Lokanath by music director Balakrushna Das. She has performed in a number of well-known Odia films, including Adina Megha, Kaa, Malajanha, Abhinetree, and Stree.

Her song ‘Nida bhara raati madhu jhara janha’ from the 1975 Odia movie ‘Anutapa’ composed by J. Adeni still remains one of the most admired Odia songs of all time. Sikandar Alam, to name a few.

Eamun Ekta Jhinuk, Abese mukh rekhe piyal dale, Bolo to arshi, Kagojer phul bole, and other contemporary songs are among them.
