The 2021 season was iconic for Formula One as it was one of the most closely contested campaigns with the champion being crowned on the very last day of the racing calendar.

The F1 motorcade is headed to Silverstone for the next race engagement with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen leading the pack for the individual championship while seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes languishes in the sixth place, almost a hundred points behind the leader.

Nearly a year ago, back in the very same circuit in England, there was an unfortunate collision that involved the two drivers. The result of the accident was that the Dutchman Verstappen was sent crashing into the tyre barricade and couldn’t finish the event as Hamilton raced to the top spot on the podium in his homeland.

Verstappen’s supporters booed the British driver for his part in the crash and many felt that Hamilton’s driving was reckless, to say the least. And among them was former Formula One champion Nelson Piquet.

A video of Brazilian Piquet, who is the father of Verstappen’s girlfriend Kelly Piquet, using a racist slur to describe Hamilton while recounting the race surfaced recently and it has become rather problematic.

The three-time champion said “The little black guy put the car in and didn’t let (Verstappen swerve in)”

The collision occurred when Hamilton tried to overtake Verstappen’s Red Bull on the near side of a corner at Silverstone, but, the rear wheel of the RB16B caressed the Mercedes automobile as Verstappen tried to defend his position by turning in at the corner.

The deft touch was enough to send the Dutchman’s vehicle out of the track and smack into the barricade as the rear tyre came loose.

This clipping has popped up right around the time of Red Bull suspending their young driver Juri Vips for using a racial slur on a live stream recently.

Nelson Piquet

Born on the 17th of August of 1952 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Nelson Souto Maior had a promising career in tennis, a sport his father Estácio excelled in, but he decided that his real route was headed to motorsports and racing.

He grew up in Brazilia and at 12 years of age, his talent in tennis was fairly recognizable. He made the trip to the United States to continue his growth in the tennis world at age 16. At that point in his life, he had started to drive karts as a 14-year-old and it quickly became his true passion.

Of course, his parents were not supportive of his racing career and it made Nelson Piquet use his mother’s surname to hide his racing trajectory from his family.

Before entering the university to study philosophy and engineering, Piquet was already a karting and sports car champions in Brazil. Emerson Fittipaldi was a big influence in Piquet’s racing career in the early stages. He won two National Championships in karting in Brazil and was recognized as a prodigy.

As Fittipaldi did, Piquet entered Formula Vee and won the championship in 1976 before moving to Europe, a move recommended by the World Champion Fittipaldi. After arriving in England with the economical opportunity of supporting his career, he entered two British Formula Three championships.

He arrived with plenty of experience and talent and established himself pretty quick, breaking Jackie Stewart’s record of most wins in a single year of Formula Three. Piquet won the Formula 3 Britain BARC championship and finished second in the Formula 3 Britain BRDC Vandervell in 1978.

Nelson Piquet Career

In 1976 Piquet was crowned Brazilian Formula Super Vee Champion. For 1978, he graduated to British F3, where he became BP champion and was offered a test session with Mclaren. McLaren declined to hire the young Brazilian but Bernie Ecclestone, owner of the Brabham team, did not hesitate.

Partner to two-time World Champion Niki Lauda he inherited the team leadership upon the Austrian’s retirement. In 1980, he scored his first victory at the United States GP West on the streets of Long Beach, California. Losing a hard-fought battle with Alan Jones for the title he reached that goal the following year.

The 1982 season was a development season for Brabham and new turbo-engine supplier BMW, but when the car came right Nelson was the man to bring it home claiming his second World Championship in 1983.

Piquet has often been criticized for only winning when his car was the best on the grid. But the fact remains that much of it was due to countless miles of testing and the bottom line is that he won when he was expected to. He was not overly concerned with gaining poles but rather chose to concentrate on the race itself.

Nelson Piquet Personal Life

In 1988, Piquet made comments about his rival Nigel Mansell, calling him an “uneducated blockhead” and calling his wife Roseanne “ugly.” He also called Ayrton Senna “gay” and Enzo Ferrari “senile.” Mansell was in particular incensed about the personal attacks on his family which he believed were “out of order”.

In 2021, during an interview on a Brazilian podcast, Piquet discussed an incident between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen at the 2021 British Grand Prix, in comments subsequently translated to “But the nigger put the car [on the inside of Copse].

Copse is a very high-speed corner, there’s no way two cars can make it side by side.” His use of a racial slur received condemnation from F1 and the community.
