Kesavan Venugopal (22 May 1948 – 11 October 2021), better known by his stage name Nedumudi Venu, was an Indian actor and screenwriter from Kerala, who predominantly worked in the Malayalam cinema. 

Considered as one of the finest actors in the history of Malayalam cinema, he acted in more than 500 films, primarily in Malayalam and also in Tamil in a career spanning nearly five decades. He wrote screenplays and directed one film. Nedumudi Venu won three National Film Awards and six Kerala State Film Awards for his various performances.

Celebrated Malayalam actor Nedumudi Venu died at a private hospital in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram on Monday. He was 73. Nedumudi Venu was hospitalized because of health complications. Considered one of the finest actors of Malayalam cinema, Nedumudi Venu acted in over 500 films.

Following the news of Nedumudi Venu’s death, tributes for the veteran actor poured in from celebs of the Malayalam film industry. South cinema superstar Prithviraj Sukumaran mourned Nedumudi Venu in a tweet, referring to the late actor as “legend”: “Farewell Venu uncle! Your body of work and your expertise over the craft will forever be research material for generations to come! Rest in peace legend,” he tweeted.

A “heartbroken” Dulquer Salmaan posted this note for Nedumudi Venu: “Rest in Peace Venu uncle ! One of our finest actors and one of the kindest human beings.”

Born on May 22, 1948, in Nedumudi, Travancore (now in Alleppey, Kerala, India), Venu is the youngest of five sons of P. K. Kesavan Nair and P. Kunjikkuttiyamma. His father was a schoolmaster.

He attended N S S Higher Secondary School, Nedumudi, and St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Champakulam. During this period, he began harboring a deep interest in art and music.

He studied at Sanatana Dharma College (SD College), Alappuzha. After he graduated, he started working as a journalist in Kalakaumudi and as a teacher in a tutorial institute. While he was residing in Thiruvananthapuram, he met Aravindan, Padmarajan, and Bharath Gopi. This granted him access to the Malayalam film industry.

Nedumudi Venu Career

Venu started his career in theatre and then went on to act in films. His first film was Thambu directed by G. Aravindan. He had shown his acting skills in the Bharathan film Aaravam. Padmarajan’s Oridathoru Phayalwan was a milestone for him.

Venu wrote scripts for movies as well. He wrote the stories for films like Kattathe Kilikkoodu, Theertham, Sruthi, Ambada Njane, Oru Katha Oru Nunnakkatha, Savidham, and Angane Oru Avadhikkalathu. He also directed a movie named Pooram. He has also acted in a few Tamil films such as Kamal Haasan’s Indian and Vikram’s Anniyan. Venu has also acted in some television serials.

He won the Best Actor award for his role in ‘Saira’ at the Zimbabwe International Film Festival in September 2007. Saira was the only film from India to be included in the festival.
