Who was Marion Barber?

Marion Sylvester Barber III (June 10, 1983 – June 1, 2022) was an American football running back who played in the National Football League (NFL) for seven seasons.

After playing college football for the Minnesota Golden Gophers, he was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the fourth round of the 2005 NFL Draft. He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2007 during his six-year tenure with the Cowboys. He played for the Chicago Bears in 2011.

Former Dallas Cowboys running back Marion Barber III has died at the age of 38, the team announced Wednesday.

“We are heartbroken by the tragic death of Marion Barber III,” the Cowboys said in a statement. “Marion was an old-school, hard-nosed football player who ran with the will to win every down. He had a passion for the game and love for his coaches and teammates. Our hearts go out to Marion’s family and friends during this difficult time.”

The cause of Barber’s death is not currently known.

“Frisco Police responded to a welfare concern at an apartment believed to be leased by Marion Barber,” the Frisco police department said in a statement. “Frisco Police along with the Collin County Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating an unattended death at the location.”

Barber played in the NFL from 2005 to 2011, spending his first six years with the Cowboys, who selected him in the fourth round of the 2005 draft out of the University of Minnesota.

Barber’s best season in the NFL came in 2007 when he rushed for 975 yards and 10 touchdowns while adding two more scores through the air en route to Pro Bowl honors.

At the end of the 2010 season, Barber signed with the Bears and spent his final season in Chicago before announcing his retirement in March 2012.

Barber attended Wayzata High School in Plymouth, Minnesota, and was a standout in football, baseball, and track. In football, he was a SuperPrep and PrepStar All-Midwest and consensus All-State honoree as a senior running back and as a defensive back.

During his last season with the Trojans, Barber amassed 1,778 rushing yards with 18 touchdowns and led his team with 10 interceptions (three of which came against Gatorade National Player of the Year and future Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer). 

In baseball, he was an Honorable Mention All-Conference center fielder. In his first and only track season, Barber qualified for the 2001 Minnesota State Class AA Championships in the 100 meters. He finished the season with a 100m time of 10.9 seconds.

Barber played college football for Minnesota Golden Gophers. He had 35 rushing touchdowns, one more than his father, Marion Barber Jr. He and Laurence Maroney helped make the Golphers backfield one of the best in the NCAA.

Barber was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the 4th round (109 overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft. Despite his talent, Barber’s career has been harmed by injuries. he never rushed for 1,000 yards or over. He was voted to the Pro Bowl in 2007 after 204 rushing yards, 975 yards, and 10 touchdowns. He added 44 catches, 282 yards, and two receiving touchdowns in 2007.

Barber was released by Dallas after the 2010 season.

Barber was signed by the Chicago Bears as a backup to Matt Forte. His fumble against the Denver Broncos lost the game. In his only season in Chicago, Barber rushed for 442 yards and 6 touchdowns on 114 carries.

On March 23, 2012, Barber announced his retirement. “I want to thank everyone who gave me the opportunity to play, and I’m very thankful to have had the chance to suit up for two of the NFL’s most storied organizations,” Barber said on the Bears’ team website.
