Krishnakumar Kunnath (23 August 1968 – 31 May 2022) popularly known as KK, was an Indian playback singer. He recorded songs in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Bengali, Assamese and Gujarati languages.

Star Bollywood singer Krishnakumar Kunnath, popularly known as KK, has died of a suspected heart attack at age 53 after a concert on Tuesday, prompting a flood of tributes from fans including Indian prime minister Narendra Modi.

“His songs reflected a wide range of emotions as struck a chord with people of all age groups,” Modi said on Twitter.

“We will always remember him through his songs. Condolences to his family and fans.”

Kunnath felt unwell while performing at a concert in Kolkata, according to the Times of India and other local media. After the show, he reportedly complained of feeling extremely cold and wanted to return to his hotel.

He was rushed to a hospital in south Kolkata from his hotel after collapsing around 10:30pm local time, where doctors pronounced him dead, the newspaper reported.

Indian minister Aroop Biswas, who rushed to the hospital after hearing the news, said Kunnath’s wife and son were flying to Kolkata. “I am here to offer all possible help to the family,” he said.

KK or Krishnakumar Kunnath was born on 23rd August 1968. He was born in a Malayali family to Kunnath Kanakavalli and CS Menon. He was, however, brought up in New Delhi. 

He completed his studies at Delhi’s Mount St Mary’s School and graduated from Kirori Mal College, DU. KK was married to Jyothy in 1991. The couple had a son named Nakul Krishna Kunnath and a daughter named Tamara Kunnath.

Born in Delhi in 1968, the versatile singer recorded songs in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi and Bengali, among other languages.

Beginning his career in jingles, Kunnath made his big-screen debut in the 1990s. As a playback singer, his songs were dubbed over films, with the actors lip-syncing along.

His biggest hits included Tadap Tadap Ke, Dus Bahane, Tune Maari Entriyaan, Dola Re Dola from the 2002 movie Devdas and Khuda Jaane from the 2008 romantic comedy Bachna Ae Haseeno.

He also released two studio albums, 1999’s Pal and 2008’s Humsafar, and worked as a judge and mentor on reality singing shows.

Thousands of fans took to his Instagram page to pay their respects, where a photo of Kunnath singing in front of a roaring crowd posted earlier in the day was accompanied with the caption: “Pulsating gig tonight at Nazrul Mancha … Love you all.”

He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.

KK Career

Playback singing for KK began when he gave his demo tape to Loius Banks, Ranjit Barot and Lesle Lewis for a break in the music industry. He started singing jingles thereafter. He was called by UTV when he sang a jingle for Santogen Suiting ad. 

He sang more than 3500 jingles in 4 years then in 11 different languages. His first break in Mumbai with UTV for jingles itself. Lesle Lewis was considered a mentor by him for giving him his first Indian jingle and making his way through Bollywood. 

But it was AR Rahman who brought KK to the forefront of playback singing. He sang the famous song, “Kalluri Saaley” and “Hello Dr.” from Kadir’s Kadhal Desam and then “Strawberry Kannae” from AVM Productions’ musical film Minsara Kanavu. 

Big Bollywood Break: Tadap Tadap

The song which broke all records in 1999 was Tadap Tadap from Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam which was sung by KK. Before that he lent his voice to Gulzar’s song Chhod Aye Hum from Maachis movie but that hardly got him any accolades.

That year, also Sony Music was looking for a new artiste and entered KK. He was selected as the artist of the year and came out with his debut solo album titled Pal with Lesle Lewis. 

KK Wife

In 1991, KK married Jyothy Krishna, his childhood sweetheart. With him, their son Nakul performed the song “Masti” from his recent album Humsafar. Taamara, KK’s daughter, is also a model.
