Karine Jean-Pierre Career
After graduation, Jean-Pierre was hired as the Director of Legislative and Budget Affairs for the New York City councilor. She then worked as an Outreach Coordinator for Walmart Watch in 2006. In 2008, she became the Southeast Regional Political Director for John Edwards’ as well as Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns. During Obama’s administration, she was appointed as the Regional Political Director for the White House Office of Political Affairs. She then went on to serve as the National Deputy Battleground States Director for President Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign.
In 2014, she started working as a lecturer in International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. In 2016, Jean-Pierre served as the Deputy Campaign Manager for the Martin O’Malley 2016 presidential campaign and was also named as the Senior Advisor and National Spokesperson for the 2016 presidential election. She became a Political Analyst for NBC News and MSNBC in 2019 as well as served as the Senior Advisor for Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign.
In May 2021, she became the first gay woman and the first Balck woman since 1991 to give a White House press briefing, for which she was added in the Queer 50 List of Fast Company. In the same year, she published her very first book “Moving Forward”. She has since been the White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary and is now set to become the White House Press Secretary on May 13, 2022, becoming the first Black woman and first openly LGBTQI+ person to do so.
