Kamila Valieva Fourth In Skating As Doping Scandal Takes Toll

Kamila Valieva, the teenager at the centre of a doping scandal that has shaken the Beijing Olympics, finished fourth in the women’s figure skating final on Thursday after an error-strewn performance handed Russian teammate Anna Shcherbakova gold. Anna Shcherbakova scored 255.95 overall to seal the title, while Valieva, who was allowed to compete despite failing a doping test before the Games, fell several times and slipped out of the medal positions in Beijing. It was a major upset for 15-year-old Valieva, who looked completely broken at the end of her programme.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) had said if Valieva placed in the top three, no medals would be awarded until “due process” had been followed to decide if she had infringed the World Anti-Doping Code.

But given the results, the award ceremony went ahead and the skaters will receive their medals on Friday.

Shcherbakova, 17, said: “My goal was to come off the ice with the full understanding that I have done my maximum.

“Today that’s how it was. I left the ice unbelievably happy.”

Kamila Valieva allegations of doping and misconduct

Kamila Valieva is also a 2022 Olympic champion in the team event. Her competing in the 2022 Winter Olympics sparked controversy after it was confirmed that she had tested positive for trimetazidine, which is banned in sports competition for increasing endurance, and two other heart medications that are not banned. Two anti-doping cases have been opened as a result of her positive drug test; the first will decide whether Valieva will be awarded for any medal performances at the Beijing Olympics, and the second will investigate Valieva’s entourage to determine how the banned substance got into her system.

Kamila Valieva Career

Valieva began skating in 2009 in RSDUSSHOR in Kazan. She was first coached by Ksenia Ivanova, followed by Marina Kudriavtseva and Igor Lyutikov, and Natalia Dubinskaya. When she turned six, she moved to Moscow to train at SSHOR Moskvich. In the spring of 2018, Valieva decided to switch skating clubs to Sambo-70, where Eteri Tutberidze decided to allow Valieva to join her group.

In the 2018–19 season, prior to her international debut, recordings of Valieva’s short program, set to Spiegel im Spiegel by Arvo Pärt and inspired by Pablo Picasso’s painting Girl on a Ball, received worldwide attention.
