The New South Wales deputy premier, John Barilaro, has quit state politics, saying NSW needs a “new beginning” and that he had been thinking of leaving for some time.

Barilaro will immediately resign from the role of deputy premier and will leave parliament, triggering yet another by-election for the NSW government.

A party room meeting will be held to choose a new leader on Wednesday with the water minister, Melinda Pavey, the regional roads minister, Paul Toole, and the agriculture minister, Adam Marshall, expected to stand. Bronwyn Taylor, the mental health minister, who is now in the upper house, is expected to run in Barilaro’s seat of Monaro and could also put her hand up.

The Nationals leader automatically becomes deputy premier under the NSW Coalition agreement, and Pavey said on Monday she had “what it takes” and “can be a good National Party leader, a good coalitionist, and be very dedicated to getting NSW through Covid”.

Barilaro has ruled out a move to federal politics. He had signaled an interest in running for the federal seat of Eden-Monaro last year when a byelection occurred but pulled out.

Announcing his decision at a press conference on Monday, he also refused to directly answer questions about whether he was under investigation by the Independent Commission Against Corruption.

John Barilaro Biography, Wiki

John Barilaro was born in Queanbeyan, NSW to Italian migrant parents who arrived in Australia in 1968. Their hard-working and selfless approach was an example that instilled in him strong values of family and community service.

John still lives in Queanbeyan with his wife Deanna and their three daughters and shares his time between the Monaro, regional NSW, and Sydney.

He is the proud Member of the Monaro and in 2016 was elected Leader of the NSW Nationals and Deputy Premier of NSW. He is currently the Minister for Regional New South Wales, Industry, and Trade. John brings a ‘hands on’ understanding and passion to all his portfolios.

Prior to entering politics, John ran his family business in Queanbeyan for 20 years, manufacturing energy-efficient windows and doors.

In 2008, he entered politics, standing for election to the Queanbeyan City Council because he believed the mums and dads of his community needed a greater say on the decisions that affected them and their local area. Three years later John stood as a candidate at the State election because he saw The Nationals as the only party that could truly deliver a fair share for rural and regional areas.

Having spent most of his working life running his own business, John has also been through most of the challenges, joys, risks, and rewards that come with starting and operating a business.

John strongly believes in supporting a thriving business economy, building a skilled workforce for the future, and investing in communities across regional NSW.

John is delivering the $1.6 billion Regional Growth Fund and the $4.2 billion Snowy Hydro Legacy Fund, to turbo-charge and transform regional economies across the state, giving communities choice in selecting the local infrastructure projects they want and need. This is one of the largest investments in regional NSW in the state’s history, and John believes in fighting every day to make sure that regional communities get their fair share.

Additionally, John is passionate about youth in our regions and works tirelessly to ensure they have the opportunities to live, work and raise a family, close to home.
