Jeanie Marie Buss Career

World Team Tennis, a tennis league run by Jeanie Buss’ father, stopped working in 1978 but was reinstated in 1981 as TeamTennis. Jerry Buss took ownership of the new version of Strings, a team under Team Tennis, and appointed Jeanie Buss as general manager of the franchise. He was 19 at the time and studying at the University of Southern California (USC). He held the franchise for a little over a decade until it collapsed in 1993. Buss then introduced the paid roller hockey in Los Angeles by launching the Los Angeles Blades in 1993. The franchise played in the Roller Hockey International league, which gave him the Executive of the Year award.

Buss was president of the Great Western Forum, which served as the home ground for the Lakers at the time. While working on the Forum, his influence on the Lakers grew. In 1999, he joined the Lakers as vice president of business administration. His brother Jim was made vice president of athletics staff in 2005. Their father wanted Jeanie Buss to finally make business decisions for the team and Jim to manage the basketball side.

In 2005, she was shortlisted for the Top 20 Most Influential Women in Sport by Sporting News. She has been hailed by Forbes as “one of the few strong women in sports management”. ESPN considers her “one of the most powerful women in the NBA”.

Her father died of cancer on February 18, 2013. Her 66 percent ownership was eventually distributed among her six children in trust, each of whom was given an equal vote. According to Jerry’s succession plan, Buss was to become the Lakers ‘chief and team representative at NBA Board of Governors’ meetings, positions that Jerry held during his lifetime. In 2013-14, he began his position as president of the Lakers.

Jeanie Buss fired Mitch Kupchak as general manager and received Jim’s resignation from his post as VP of Basketball Operations on February 21, 2017. He subsequently appointed Magic Johnson as Basketball Operations President. He later offered the position of general manager to sports agency Rob Pelinka.
In 2000, Buss founded Women of Wrestling (WoW) with David McLane. She co-wrote the memoir ‘Laker Girl’ with Steve Springer. The book was published in 2010 by Triumph Books.
