James Lovelock, the creator of the Gaia hypothesis, has died on his 103rd birthday. The climate scientist died at home on Tuesday surrounded by loved ones, his family said.

Lovelock, who was one of the UK’s most respected independent scientists, had been in good health until six months ago, when he had a bad fall.

Known as something of a maverick, he had been dispensing predictions from his one-man laboratory since the mid-1960s, and in his old age he continued to work.

His Gaia hypothesis posits that life on Earth is a self-regulating community of organisms interacting with each other and their surroundings. He said two years ago that the biosphere was in the last 1% of its life.

James Lovelock, in full James Ephraim Lovelock, (born July 26, 1919, Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire, England—died July 26, 2022, Abbotsbury, Dorset), English chemist, medical doctor, scientific instrument developer, and author best known for the creation and promulgation of the Gaia hypothesis, an idea rooted in the notion that all life on Earth is part of an entity that regulates Earth’s surficial and atmospheric processes.

Lovelock was also the inventor of several chemical-detecting devices, including the electron-capture detector (ECD).

Lovelock was the son of Thomas Arthur Lovelock, an art dealer, and Nellie Ann Elizabeth March, a town councilwoman. As a child he became interested in science and exploration through the writings of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells.

In 1941 he graduated from the University of Manchester with a B.S. degree in chemistry and joined the Medical Research Council at the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), London, where he spent most of the next 20 years of his career.

During that time Lovelock also worked (1946–51) at the Common Cold Research Unit at Harvard Hospital, Salisbury, Wiltshire, and received a Ph.D. (1948) in medicine from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

After he received a Rockefeller traveling fellowship in medicine, he worked (1954–55) on cryopreservation at Harvard University, and he worked (1958–59) on gas chromatography at Yale University.

James Lovelock Career

A lifelong inventor, Lovelock has created and developed many scientific instruments, some of which were designed for NASA in its program of planetary exploration. It was while working as a consultant for NASA that Lovelock developed the Gaia Hypothesis, for which he is most widely known.

In early 1961, Lovelock was engaged by NASA to develop sensitive instruments for the analysis of extraterrestrial atmospheres and planetary surfaces. The Viking program, that visited Mars in the late 1970s, was motivated in part to determine whether Mars supported life, and many of the sensors and experiments that were ultimately deployed aimed to resolve this issue.

During work on a precursor of this program, Lovelock became interested in the composition of the Martian atmosphere, reasoning that many life forms on Mars would be obliged to make use of it (and, thus, alter it).

However, the atmosphere was found to be in a stable condition close to its chemical equilibrium, with very little oxygen, methane, or hydrogen, but with an overwhelming abundance of carbon dioxide.

To Lovelock, the stark contrast between the Martian atmosphere and chemically dynamic mixture of that of our Earth’s biosphere was strongly indicative of the absence of life on the planet. However, when they were finally launched to Mars, the Viking probes still searched (unsuccessfully) for extant life there.
