Girish Malik Biography, Wikipedia

Girish Malik was an independent stage actor and never had an inclination to do acting in films. But everything changed when he got an offer to get a role for Govinda’s ‘Shola Aur Shabnam’. Later, two more films, Krantiveer, and Tirangaa followed.

When people were praising him for his performance in all these three films that were even blockbusters, he soon got offers to direct advertisement films for Fortune companies and thus, he got an overall opportunity to direct 150 films.

Later on, he decided to quit as an actor and opt for making films. So, that was his journey from an actor to filmmaker. Finally, he landed up in making a film ‘Jal’ (water), which showcases the real meaning of scarcity of water in the region of Gujarat. He filmed the entire schedule in Kutch, with a simple and flawless cast and the film bagged him wave reviews in national and international film festivals.

The film was made in such a way that it could incorporate the commercial aspect in the film. ‘Jal’ was not an art-house film. Neither did it define art or popular cinema even but it was artistic. The film had excellent photography which is why many international viewers claimed that the film had related to breath-taking photographs on the tragedy of Shakespeare. The film cast was simple.

The film had Purab Kohli, Tannishtha Chatterjee and Kirti Kulhari in lead roles. Since he was an avid traveler, he chose to make ‘Jal’ which he had in his mind for several years. The film also gave singer Sonu Nigam a break as a music director.

The film was an Indian entry in Oscar and even won a national award for visual effects. Besides being in the race for Oscar nominations, the film got selected in the Oscar library. It was also screened in Goa international film festival (2014) and was an entry in Busan International Film Festival.

After the success of Jal, the director is finalizing on two more scripts and looks forward to taking his films to a new level of thinking and promotion.
