Gabriela Sabatini Career, Achievements
She gained worldwide fame in 1984 when she won seven of the eight junior competitions she entered, including the French Open girls’ singles, and was ranked No. 1 World Player of the Year that year.
In 1985, she reached the semi-finals of the French Open, where he lost to Chris Evert. At the age of 15 and three weeks, Sabatini was one of the youngest players to reach the semi-finals of the tournament.
She reached her first major in the Grand Slam at the US Open in 1988 where she faced Steffi Graf who was in good form that year and has already won three Grand Slam events. Sabatini loses Graf.
Sabatini carried the Argentine flag at the opening ceremony of the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul and went on to win a silver medal in the women’s singles competition. Her career slowed down in 1989 when she failed to win any major titles. After losing the 1990 French Open, she hired Carlos Kimayr, a top Brazilian player, as her coach. Under her direction she went back with better physical endurance and mental strength.
In 1990, she again faced Graf — now one of his progressive rivals — in the US Open finals where Graf was her favorite. Sabatini defeated Graf by two sets and won his first Grand Slam title. Sabatini went on to defeat him in the WTA Tour Championships final. However, she lost in the WTA Tour Championship final to Monica Seles.
She started the year 1991 on a solid basis and won five tournaments in the first half of the year. With his consistent form and success, he came close to securing the World No. 1 spot but lost slightly to Graf and then to Monica Seles. His level remained close to that of Graf and Seles most of the year.
She won five tournaments in 1992 but did not win any Grand Slam title. In fact, she did not even reach the finals of the Grand Slam. The year saw a heated court battle between Sabatini and Graf, with Graf defeating Sabatini easily in the Wimbledon semi final.
She failed to win any competition in 1993. At the US Open he faced Graf in the quarterfinals and despite giving his best, he lost to him. Saturday’s win lasted 29 long months and finally broke through with the 1994 WTA Tour Championships final against Lindsay Davenport.
She went on to lose the game all over 1995 leading the tennis team to guess she was angry. She played her final high-profile song in October 1996 and lost to Jennifer Capriati. She retired from professional travel in 1996, winning 27 song titles and 14 double titles.
After retiring, she focused on her spice business, which she started in the 1980’s. Her business interests include the perfume line introduced in partnership with the German perfume company Muelhens.
