Farrukh Jaffar (1933 – 15 October 2021) was an Indian actress and radio presenter. Having begun her career with Vividh Bharti in 1963, she made a transition into acting with a supporting role in the 1981 film Umrao Jaan. Jaffar continued to act sporadically, and beginning in the late 2010s, gained wider recognition for working in a spate of critically successful films. 

At the age of 88, she won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Fatima Begum in Gulabo Sitabo, becoming the oldest winner of an acting Filmfare.

Actress Farrukh Jaffar, renowned for her roles in the films ‘Gulabo Sitabo’ and ‘Sultan,’ died on Friday at a hospital in Mumbai. She was 89 years old. The news has made the entire film industry go in mourning.

Mehru Jaffar, her eldest daughter, stated that her mother was ill and was admitted to Sahara Hospital early this month. “She was admitted to the hospital on October 4 due to breathlessness. She was not well. Her lungs were unable to take the oxygen that had been given to her. She passed away in the evening at around 6 pm,” Mehru said while speaking to PTI.

Jaffar’s grandson Shaaz Ahmad also announced the news of her death on Twitter. He wrote, “My grandmother and wife of Freedom fighter, Ex MLC Mr S.M.Jaffar and Veteran Actress Mrs Farrukh Jafar passed away today at 7 pm in Lucknow.”

Her last rites will be carried out today.

Jaffer, who was one of the original radio broadcasters for Vividh Bharti Lucknow in 1963, made her film debut in the 1981 classic ‘Umrao Jaan,’ in which she played actress Rekha’s mother.

Farrukh Jaffar was born to the family of Chakesar village, Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh. She belongs to the wealthy family of Zamidar in UP. There is not much known about her parents or siblings.

Farrukh Jaffar got married at a very young age however she completed her graduation from the University of Lucknow. After completing graduation in the early ’60s, she started a job as an announcer at All India Radio Lucknow in 1963.

Farrukh’s story is very interesting, Once she accompanied her friend for the audition at radio station and got a special attraction after seeing a recording room, mic, and a studio. Somehow, she managed for the audition and got selected for the job.

She worked there along with Parveen Talha and Mr. Sinha. Moreover, she became the first announcer at Akashavni Lucknow. In her successful career at Lucknow Radio Station, Farrukh worked with the show GeetonBhari Kahani, Panchrangi Programm. She used to say popular line while airing show,

Next, Farrukh Jaffar moved to Delhi and joined Vividh Bharti at All India Radio station of Delhi. She worked there till 1970 and then due to some family reasons she quit the job at AIR Delhi and returned hometown.

While working in All India Radio Delhi, Farrukh Jaffar also started taking interest in theater acting. She attended acting workshops of Ebrahim Alkazi in Delhi. She also featured as the mother in the Urdu translation of Luigi Pirandello’s Italian play, “Six Characters in a Search of an Author.”

Film Career

In 1981, Actress Farrukh started her professional acting career in films with Umrao Jaan. She played the role of Rekha’s mother in the film. Next in 2004, She featured in the film Swadesh and played the role of Panch Fatima Bi.

Farrukh got huge appreciations for her work in films like Parched (2015), Barefoot to Goa, Amma Ki Boli (2013). Following years, Farrukh Jaffar made an appearance in the noted Bollywood films such as Peepli Live, Chakravyuh, Sultan, and Tanu Weds Manu.

Her latest work includes films such as The House Next Door (2017), Secret Super Star (2017), and Photograph (2019), and Sandeep Kumar’s Mehrunissa. In the film Photograph, she’s featured along with legendary actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

In 2020, Actress Farrukh Jaffar became a part of the main cast for the film Gulabo Sitaabo. She played the role of sassy Begum alongside superstar Amitabh Bachchan and Aayushman Khurana.
