Who is Elizabeth Holmes?

Elizabeth Anne Holmes (born February 3, 1984) is an American former biotechnology entrepreneur who was convicted of criminal fraud.

In 2003, Holmes founded and was the chief executive officer (CEO) of Theranos, a now-defunct health technology company that soared in valuation after the company claimed to have revolutionized blood testing by developing methods that could use surprisingly small volumes of blood, such as from a fingerprick.

By 2015, Forbes had named Holmes the youngest and wealthiest self-made female billionaire in America on the basis of a $9-billion valuation of her company. In the following year, as revelations of potential fraud about Theranos’s claims began to surface, Forbes revised its estimate of Holmes’s net worth to zero, and Fortune named her in its feature article on “The World’s 19 Most Disappointing Leaders”.

Elizabeth Holmes Biography, Wiki

Once hailed as the youngest self-made female billionaire, Holmes graced countless magazine covers, spoke at global summits, pow-wowed with world leaders and promised to radically change the world for the better. Now? She is a convicted criminal. So, what exactly happened?

Holmes was born in Washington DC in 1984, to a family of entrepreneurs and successful businessmen. Her great-grandfather had founded the vastly lucrative American brand Fleischmann’s Yeast. Her father – somewhat ironically – was vice president of Enron, an American energy brand that was convicted of mass accounting fraud in 2001.

A prodigious, bright student, she studied chemical engineering at Stanford, but dropped out, like so many successful Silicon Valley wunderkinder before her, when she hit upon an idea. She registered her first patent in 2003 and left Stanford in 2004.

Her plan? To start a medical company that would prevent major diseases through early detection. It became Theranos, which would turn out to be both her greatest achievement and her destruction.

By December 2004, Theranos had raised $6 million. At its height, it was valued as a $9 billion company. It was billed as “the Apple of healthcare” and Holmes, who deliberately modeled herself on Steve Jobs, was soon catapulted into instant fame.

She was not only a rarity as a female founder in Silicon Valley, her company was – unlike the vague disclaimers of other big tech brands – actually aiming to save lives. She was the messiah in a polo neck… until she wasn’t.

Elizabeth Holmes Career

Holmes started a Real-Time Cures company in Palo Alto (California) in 2003 to “democratize healthcare”. Her motivation was her fear of needles.

She wanted to perform blood tests in small amounts. Holmes presented the idea of a blood test at their fingertip to her Stanford medicine professor Phyllis Gardner. Her frustration was reflected in her reaction, “I don’t suppose your idea is going to work.”

She didn’t give up, even though other professors had the same reaction. Holmes was able to get Channing Robertson, her Engineering School advisor, to back up her idea.

In 2003, Holmes changed the name of Theranos to refer to her company. It is a short form for “therapy” or “diagnosis”. She was a fan of Steve Jobs, the Apple founder, and she copied his dressing style in a black turtleneck sweater. Holmes was close to influential people like Henry Kissinger, George Shultz, and James Mattis.

Elizabeth Holmes Theranos

Theranos claimed that it had revolutionized blood test technology by using state-of-the-art systems and detection techniques. They also claim that they can run blood tests with surprisingly small blood volumes, such as those taken from finger pricks.

It turned out that this was false. Holmes and Ramesh Balwani, the former Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Theranos, are currently being tried. If Holmes is convicted, she could face up to 20 years imprisonment in federal prison.

Elizabeth Holmes Awards

They ran Theranos in a corporate culture that was “secrecy-fearful”. Balwani left Theranos in 2016 while the company was being investigated. He claimed Holmes fired him, but Holmes said he left the company at his will. Holmes was the owner of half of Theranos shares before March 2018.
