Thomas was born to Bobby Thomas and Katina Smith in Montrose, Georgia, on Christmas Day, 1987. When he was a kid, police raided the house where his mother and grandmother lived. On July 13, 2015, President Barack Obama commuted the sentence of his mother, Katina Smith. She was released at midnight on November 11–12, 2015, and saw her son play football for the first time on January 17, 2016. On August 2, 2016, Obama commuted the sentence of his grandmother, Minnie Pearl Thomas.

Thomas was an Evangelical Christian. Thomas frequently posted about his faith on his Twitter account. Thomas had a tattoo of a portrait of Jesus with the phrase “Jesus Saves” under the portrait on his left arm.
