Chappelle was born on 24th August, 1973 in Washington, D. C. He grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland. As his parents were politically active, political figures frequently visited his family house, including Pete Seeger and Johnny Hartman.
It was Hartman who predicted that Chappelle would be a comedian and it was around this time that he was interested in comedy and was inspired by Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor. His parents separated, after which he stayed with his mother in Washington, while spending his summers in with his father in Ohio.

Chappelle’s father William David Chappelle III was a vocal performance professor and dean at Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio. Chapelle also has a stepmother and stepbrother after his father remarried. He has a two siblings named William S. Chappelle and Felicia Chappelle Jones.

Chappelle decided to pursue a career as a comedian and moved to New York City. He appeared in Russell Simmons’ “Def Comedy Jam” on HBO for which he gained critical and popular acclaim in 1992. He became a regular guest on television shows like Politically Incorrect, Late Show with David Letterman, The Howard Stern Show and Late Night with Conan O’Brien.
In 2000, he recorded “Dave Chappelle: Killin’ Them Softly”, his first hour-long HBO special. He debuted his own sketch comedy show called “Chappelle’s Show” aired on Comedy Central. In June 2014, Chappelle made a appearance in New York City after eleven years of break. He performed ten nights at Radio City Music Hall. Netflix released three new stand up comedy specials of Chappelle in 2017, which was a success and became the most viewed comedy special in Netflix history.
Chappelle received many awards and nominations throughout his career. He has won three consecutive Grammy Awards for Best Comedy Album.
