Colin Cantwell, the man who designed the spacecraft in the Star Wars films, has died. He was 90.
The Hollywood Reporter reported Sunday that Sierra Dall, Cantwell’s partner, confirmed that he died at his home in Colorado on Saturday.
Cantwell designed the prototypes for the X-wing Starfighter, TIE fighter and Death Star.
He also worked on films including 2001: A Space Odyssey, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and WarGames.

Colin Cantwell Career
Colin’s fascination with space began as a child when he devoured all of the books in the elementary school library. Colin’s other passion was architecture. Colin found work at JPL and NASA developing instructional programs for the general public about current advances in space exploration.
Colin worked on other space projects after that, including “The Buck Rogers TV show,” “War Games,” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” It also led to his scripting, directing, and creating “Journey to the Outer Planets,” the first Imax theater at San Diego’s Reuben H. Fleet Space Theater.
George Lucas selected Colin to create the drawings and models for the X-wing, TIE fighter, Star Destroyer, Death Star, Landspeeder, Sandcrawler, Millennium Falcon, and other Star Wars spacecraft.
