Chris Smalls Career
Smalls pursued a career as a rapper for a brief time and also toured with Meek Mill. He gave up to support his children by doing odd jobs at Walmart, Home Depot and MetLife Stadium from 2012 to 2015. He also worked as a warehouse worker at FedEx and Target. Smalls joined Amazon in 2015 as a picker, after which he was transferred to a warehouse in Connecticut. He was then appointed as the Assistant Manager in 2018 at the Staten Island warehouse (JFK8) of the company.
In 2020, he along with one of his co-worker organized a walkout to protest against Amazon’s safety protocol after they let a worker who was ill during the pandemic before his COVID-19 results could come back. On the same day. he was fired on the terms that he had violated the safety protocols. After a thorough investigation it wa found that he was illegally fired and the company was forced to rehire him. He was discharged in 2020, Smalls found The Congress of Essential Workers (TCOEW) and in April 2021 he established Amazon Labor Union (ALU) backed by his group.

In 2020, Smalls filed a lawsuit against Amazon where he stated that the company violated federal and state law by risking the workers lives during the pandemic. Following his complaint, the attorney general of New York- Letitia James sued Amazon for providing inadequate safety precautions and their retaliation against the employees in 2021.
