Since Alapan Banerjee has retired today on May 31 from his service, he is not going to join in Delhi,” said Mamata. “I will not allow Alapan Banerjee to leave Nabanna. He is now the Chief Adviser to Chief Minister,” she added.

Meanwhile, HK Dwivedi has been appointed as the new West Bengal Chief Secretary, while BP Gopalika has been named as the new Home Secretary, said Banerjee.

Announcing Bandopadhyay’s decision to retire, Banerjee said that she stood beside bureaucrats and that the Modi government had disrespected bureaucrats through its move. “They are not bound to do whatever they are told. Enough is enough. I am with bureaucrats. They have been insulted. They [at the Centre] are full of empty speeches and [expect] bureaucrats to do the heavy lifting,” she said, as reported by local media.

What led to BP Gopalika Appointment?

The Centre on May 28 issued a letter to Alapan Bandopadhyay asking him to report to the Union home ministry in New Delhi on May 31 (Monday).

This prompted Mamata Banerjee to send a letter to PM Narendra Modi seeking rescinding of the order. The Centre apparently did not respond, following which Alapand Bandopadhyay decided to retire from active service.

Addressing a press conference in Kolkata on Monday, Mamata Banerjee said, “We want his service for the pandemic. Everybody knows how he [Bandopadhyay] worked and that is why we are safe today.”

Alapan Bandopadhyay is now the special advisor to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
