Who is Azam Khan?

Mohammad Azam Khan (born 14 August 1948) is an Indian politician serving as the Member of Parliament from Rampur. He is one of the founding members of the Samajwadi Party and was a member of the Seventeenth Legislative Assembly of Uttar Pradesh. 

He was also the senior most Cabinet Minister in the Government of Uttar Pradesh and has been a member of the legislative assembly for ten terms from Rampur assembly constituency.

Senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan was released from the Sitapur district jail in Uttar Pradesh on Friday morning, a day after the Supreme Court granted him interim bail in a cheating case relating to Kotwali police station in Rampur.

Azam Khan was lodged in jail for over two years in connection with several cases, including that of land grabbing.

He was granted bail in 88 out of 89 cases and the grant of the interim bail by the Supreme Court paved the way for his release.

A prison official said that the release order was received around 11pm on Thursday and the SP leader was released around 8 am on Friday after following all procedures, reported news agency PTI.

Khan, upon his release, was welcomed by his sons Abdullah Azam Khan and Adeeb Azam Khan, Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party (Lohiya) leader Shivpal Singh Yadav and a large number of supporters.

“The Supreme Court gave justice,” said Abdullah Azam Khan, MLA from Suar constituency, ahead of his father’s release from Sitapur district jail.

“I am very happy (with Supreme Court’s order). We will go to Rampur directly (after the release),” ANI quoted Adeeb Azam Khan as saying.

Azam Khan is the founding member of Samajwadi Party and a member of seventeenth Legislative Assembly in Uttar Pradesh. He has served as the MLA of Rampur constituency for nine terms. After graduation, Azam Khan did his LLB from Aligarh Muslim University in 1974.

He started practising as a lawyer and later he joined politics. Before joining Mulayam Singh Yadav he had been affiliated with Janta Dal, Lok Dal and Janta Party. In 1992, when Mulayalam Singh Yadav left Janata Dal and launched Samajwadi Party, Azam Khan had a key role in the formation of the party.

Azam Khan Education

Hailing from Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, India, Azam was born on August 14, 1948, to Mumtaz Khan. He completed his bachelor’s degree in Laws from Aligarh Muslim University in 1974. Before entering the field of politics, Azam pursued his career as a lawyer.

Before joining Samajwadi Party, Azam was also a member of four different political parties between 1980 to 1992. In the 8th Legislative Assembly of Uttar Pradesh Azam contested elections as a member of the Janata Party (Secular) and served his first term.

Followed by the 9th Legislative Assembly of Uttar Pradesh from Lok Dal as the second term, and a member of Lok Dal in his Third term from the 10th Legislative Assembly of Uttar Pradesh. Again in his fourth term, he was a member of the Janata Party. 

Azam Khan was one of the founding members of the Samajwadi Party and joined it in 1993. He has been the Member of the Legislative Assembly for nine terms from his assembly constituency Rampur.

Earlier Azam was also one of the cabinet ministers in the government of Uttar Pradesh. On May 17, 2009, Azam resigned from the post of  General Secretary of the SP party.  

During the 15th Loksabha elections of Uttar Pradesh, there were major controversies related to Samajwadi Party candidate, Jaya Prada which led to many ups and downs in the party.

While Azam said that he was expelled from the party for six years on May 24, 2009, the party chief claimed he himself resigned,

On December 4 2010 Samajwadi Party revoked his resignation and Azam Khan Again Joined the party. 

As he won the 2014 election, Samajwadi Party gave him the ticket to the Lok Sabha elections in 2019.
