Aruna Irani (born 18 August 1946) is an Indian actress, who has acted in over 500 films throughout Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, and Gujarati cinema, playing mostly supporting and character roles.
She has won two Filmfare Awards for Best Supporting Actress, for Pet Pyaar Aur Paap (1985) and Beta (1992), and has been nominated most times, holding a record for the most nominations in the category.
In January 2012, Irani was honored with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award at the 57th Filmfare Awards.

Aruna Irani and Mehmood were a hit onscreen pair of the 1970s, so much so that there was a time when many believed they were married. In fact, that was also the reason why Aruna didn’t get any film offers for two years.
Aruna revealed that despite hits like Caravan and Bombay To Goa, she got no work. She told TOI, “Somehow people misunderstood that I got married to Mehmood and at that time, I didn’t even try to clear things in public. And for almost two to two and a half years, I didn’t get any work, despite both my films Caravan and Bombay To Goa becoming superhit.”
It was only after Raj Kapoor offered her Bobby in 1973 that she got her career on track. “It’s like Mehmood made my career and he was also responsible for my downfall (laughs),” she said. The actor, however, also shared that working with Mehmood was always nice.
“What an actor he was! He taught me a lot about acting, comedy punches, and timings. Working with him was always a great help,” Aruna shared.

Aruna Irani is an Indian actress of mixed Irani Zoroastrian and Hindu backgrounds. An accomplished actress and dancer of her time, Aruna Irani has acted in about 300 movies, with many memorable acting performances to her credit. Irani is the sister of filmmaker Indra Kumar. She is married to film director Kuku Kohli.
Born in 1952, Irani made her debut in the movie Gunga Jumna (1961) when she was nine years old playing Vyjayantimala’s character as a child.
After doing several small roles in films like Jahanara (1964), Farz (1967), Upkar (1967) and Aaya Sawan Jhoomke (1969), and pairing with comedian Mehmood in films like Aulad (1968), Humjoli (1970), and Naya Zamana (1971), she finally shot to fame with her brilliant performance as an aggressive gypsy woman in the super hit Caravan (1971).
By that time, however, she was emotionally involved with Mehmood and did not focus fully on her career. Their relationship also ruined the chances of her getting the heroine’s role.
Yet, Mehmood gave her lead roles opposite the likes of Amitabh Bachchan and Vinod Mehra in the films that he made: Bombay To Goa (1972), Garam Masala (1972), and Do Phool (1973).

As an actress, her performance as Anil Kapoor’s stepmother in the film Beta remains her best performance. This performance also fetched her Filmfare’s Best Supporting Actress Award.
In an illustrious career that she has, she was nominated 10 times out of which she won 2. She was also honored with Filmfare’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012 for her contribution to Indian cinema.
Besides the silver screen, she has also produced and acted in television serials too. She made her television debut as an actress and producer through the famous series called Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand in 2001.
The show ran till 2005. After which, she has produced and acted in numerous television series like Tum Bin Jaaoon Kahaan, Babul Ki Bitiya Chali Doli Saja Ke, and Dekha Ek Khwaab among many others. She is presently working on television series titled Dil Toh Happy Hain Ji.
