Former group operating officer at the NSE Anand Subramanian was arrested by the CBI late on Thursday night days after he was questioned about his role at the country’s largest stock exchange. The central probe agency had also put out notices against Subramanian amid probe over irregularities at the  NSE (National Stock Exchange).

The emails exchanged between the NSE’s former CEO Chitra Ramkrishna with a ‘yogi’ living in the Himalayas have gained wide attention in the midst of the investigation. She was questioned for 12 hours by the CBI last week in the ‘tick-by-tick’ manipulation case – that pertains to the unfair dissemination of information from the servers of the exchange to those of the stockbrokers.

Earlier this month, Market regulator Sebi had slapped a fine of ₹3 crores on  Ramkrishna for exchanging confidential information over emails with this ‘yogi’, an unknown individual.

Subramanian was the Chief Strategic Advisor from April 1, 2013, and was re-designated as Group Operating Officer (GOO) and advisor to Chitra Ramakrishna when she was managing director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) from April 01, 2015, till October 21, 2016. Interestingly, Anand Subramaniam was brought into NSE by Chitra Ramakrishna without allegedly following the rules and procedures.

The Securities & Exchanges Board of India (Sebi) had received several complaints between December 15, 2015, to November 2016 alleging governance issues in the appointment of Anand Subramanian as the Group Operating Officer and advisor to Chitra Subramaniam.

According to the complaints, Anand Subramanian was hired at such a senior position without having any proper experience in the finance sector and was withdrawing a salary of more than Rs 4 crore per annum which was much higher than most of the seniors at NSE.

Before coming to NSE, Anand used to work with Balmer and Lawrie in middle-level management with zero exposure to capital markets. He was given a salary of Rs 1.68 crore per annum where his salary in his previous job was just Rs 15 lakh per annum. His salary was increased every year on instructions of Chitra Ramakrishna and from April 2016, Anand was withdrawing a salary of Rs 4.21 crore per annum.

According to Sebi’s report, Chitra Ramakrishna was completely dependent on Anand Subramanian and all her key decisions of her were in consultation with him.

According to Sebi’s report, Chitra Ramakrishna, during the inquiry allegedly told them she was being guided by a ‘yogi’ and all her decisions were based on this unknown ‘yogi’. The Sebi also came across certain emails in which the unknown ‘yogi’ advised Chitr

a Ramakrishna to designate Anand Subramanian as the Group Operating Office which she followed.

Sebi’s report also indicates that Anand Subramaniam was impersonating as the unknown ‘yogi’ and instructing Chitra over the emails regarding his salary and designation. CBI is also going through the seized documents and material to verify if Anand Subramaniam was impersonating as the ‘yogi’ for his financial benefits by manipulating the functioning of NSE.
