Adnan Sami Khan (born 15 August 1971) is an Indian singer, musician, music composer and pianist . He performs Indian and Western music, including for Hindi, Kannada, Telugu and Tamil movies.

He has been awarded with Padma Shri (India’s fourth highest civilian award) for his remarkable contribution in music. His most notable instrument is the piano. He has been credited as “the first musician to have played the santoor and Indian classical music on the piano”. 

A review in the US-based Keyboard magazine described him as the fastest keyboard player in the world and called him the keyboard discovery of the nineties.

Singer Adnan Sami left most of his fans worried when he deleted all his Instagram posts and just shared ‘Alvida’. While many anxiously asked whether he was alright, others understood it as a ‘new beginning’.

One fan wrote, “What happened sir? I think this is a new beginning! Your new song or something?” Another asked, “A new start?” Others questioned whether it was for the late singer Bhupinder Singh who passed away yesterday.

Several others panicked asking him ‘not to do this’, and to provide some clarity on whether he was alright. However, singer Anurag Rao seems to know the truth as he just commented, “This is going to be a blazing track…”

Just a few weeks ago, Adnan had shared photos from his Maldives vacation and stunned fans with his transformation.

The singer, who has struggled with obesity, has now reportedly lost 155 kgs. He had earlier shared a throwback post featuring Madhuri Dixit and Ameesha Patel, writing, “Throwback with dear friends Madhuri Dixit Nene, Ameesha Patel, and I from many ‘kilos’ ago!.”

Adnan Sami Khan, known more popularly as Adnan Sami, is a British-born singer, musician, pianist, and composer based in India.

Sami rose to fame during the 1990s and early 2000s and became a recognizable music personality in Indian and international circuits. Sami’s style merges indigenous musical traditions and Western music styles that range from classical to jazz, to modern pop-rock.

Born in UK to a Pakistani Father and an Indian mother, Sami spent the formative years of his life in London. He started learning to play the piano at the age of 5 and produced his first piece of musical composition at the age of 9.

As a teenager, Sami played the piano at a TV program in Stockholm and was credited by the US based Keyboard Magazine, as being the ‘Fastest man on Keyboard in the World.’ From a very young age, Sami received his formal training in South Asian Classical music from the famous Santoor Maestro, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma.

Sami studied at the Rugby School in Rugby, England’s West Midlands. After earning his bachelor’s degree, Adnan went on to King’s College London to earn his law degree (LLB). Later, he earned his English bar admission from Lincoln’s Inn.

Since he was five years old, he had been a pianist, and at the age of nine, he wrote his first piece of music. When Sami travelled to India during his summer break, he started taking lessons in Indian classical music from the santoor master Pandit Shivkumar Sharma.

When he was eleven years old, Indian singer Asha Bhosle met him at an R. D. Burman concert in London and urged him to pursue music professionally. He is a skilled concert pianist, composer, and performer who is fluent in both Indian and Western classical and semi-classical music.

Adnan’s first single was released in 1986. The English language album was an instant success and delivered several hits such as “Run for his life”, “Talk To Me”, and “You’re My Best Kept Secret”.

In 1989, Sami released another album, an Indian classical one called The One & Only, with Sami on the piano accompanied by tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain. Sami recorded his first solo album Raag Time in 1992 and the song “Jab Chandani Barh Kar” was a major hit.

Adnan also bagged the role of lead actor in the Pakistani film, Sargam (1994) which went on to become the biggest selling soundtrack album of all time in Pakistan.

However it was in 2000, that Sami collaborated with veteran Indian singing legend Asha Bhosle and released an album titled, Kabhi to Nazar Milao which shot Sami to instant fame in India as well as Pakistan. He composed the music for the album as well. From this album, the vibrant song “Lift Karadey”, which had him starring in the music video as well, infected the country with its catchy beats.

Due to the immense popularity of his music videos and live performances, he began to get offers from the film industry. The song, ‘Tu sirf mera mehboob’, from the Hindi movie Ajnabee (2001) sung by Adnan was a super-hit. His second studio album, Tera Chehra, was released in 2002 and was the only successful pop album of the year.

The film Saathiya (2002) brought him the opportunity to work with maestro A R Rahman in the form of the song ‘Aye Udi Udi’. Since then, Sami has sung for a number of Indian films, in various languages.

In 2010, he received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the Prime Minister of Pakistan and in the following year, he was bestowed with the Glory of India Award, by the Government of India.

He continues to make his mark in the Indian film industry with his work in the recent hits Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), Shootout at Wadala (2013) and Sadiyaan: Boundaries Divide… Love Unites (2010).
